Human nature means we’d rather be wrong with the group than right by ourselves. That is, different people can react in different ways to the same environment. Create an environment where doing the right things is as easy as possible.īoiling water will soften a potato but harden an egg. That is, human beings are naturally lazy so if you create an obstacle or a barrier between you and a bad habit, you’re more likely to kick the habit or do it less. Human nature means it’s easier to avoid temptation than resist it. It’s impossible to shake a bad habit in a negative environment. However, for those that checked themselves into rehab, the failure rate was equivalently high because when they checked out they went back to their regular life where all the sight, smells and sounds that triggered their addiction were. After some research they discovered that all the triggers associated with the use of heroin stayed at war that is why the recovery was so high. Such was the belief because there was a 90% recidivism rate for people that went into rehab. A surprising result at the time because it was believed that once you were addicted to heroin you were pretty much addicted for life. They had to create a problem to get these men off heroin when they returned to the US and what they found was hat 90% of addicts, once clean, stayed off. Interestingly, during the Vietnam war it was observed by the then secretary of state that 15-20% of servicemen were addicted to heroin.The influence of environment is so strong that (apparently) the biggest determinant of a 15-year old’s IQ is their best friend at the age of 11.That is, if you want to improve anything about yourself it won’t happen if you’re not in a conducive environment. That is, how you intend to implement a particular habit.Įnvironment is the invisible hand that shapes human behaviour. That is, make a plan beforehand about when and where to act. Without good health habits you’ll always feel low on energy.Without good financial habits you’ll always struggle for the next dollar.Without good learning habits you’ll always be behind the curve.Habits do not restrict freedom, they create it: You become your habits, i.e You are the sum total of your habits. Lofty goals + a rubbish system means you will not get to those goals. That is, in addition to setting goals you need to set out a systematic way for achieving those long-term goals. You don’t rise to the level of your goals. I wanted to save almost every sentence because it was all so valuable but as that isn’t possible here are a few things I took note of as I listened to the audiobook: One of the best self-improvement books that I have read in a very long time.
